About
-Foreground-
Since I now find myself free of most worldly obligations, here I go –
-Background-
I’ve always seen “Art” as a gift, a free gift. Everything I do or is given to me is from a new place and space.
1970 - Walking down an alley in Venice, California, people on a scaffolding painting a mural, “I’ve always wanted to do that”; the person in charge said, “can you paint?” “Yes” I replied; he said, “climb on up”.
1971 - Working with “the crew” at the Wight Gallery, UCLA.
1978 - The Director of the Museum of Cultural History, UCLA (now the Fowler Museum) asked if I would be their exhibition designer. I asked, “what does that mean?”; he replied, “you have complete freedom to do whatever you like in the space”. Well, “OK!”
1985 - Party in the Hollywood hills, a known conservator comes up to me and asks if I would be interested in developing a new field in conservation at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu; earthquake mitigation, making isolation devises and mounts to protect period rooms and works of art from damage in the event of an earthquake. “Sure, why not?”
2008 - Former colleague from the J. Paul Getty Museum told me that the Bishop Museum in Honolulu needed some help and guidance with the reinstallation of Hawaiian Hall. He told them “the person for the job is on Maui”.
-The Question-
Where does it come from? Where is it going? What does it mean?
-Answer-
I don’t know; I don’t really care, I just love being able to do it!
